The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture and the Rioja Consejo Regulador have authorised several new international white grape varieties. Wines made from Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Verdejo, as well as the native Maturana Blanca, Tempranillo Blanco and Turruntés (not Torrontés) in future may be labelled as Rioja DOCa wines. Spanish researchers from the universities of Léon and Santiago de Compostello have developed software that automatically recognizes vineyards on satellite photographs. The software is useful to quickly calculate the potential proceeds of vineyards. That is one of the requirements the E.U. imposes on wine-producing countries.
