Succesful Harvest 2008 In Germany

German wine growers are satisfied with the size and quality of the grape harvest this year, according to the Deutsches Weininstitut Mainz. 2007 Dönnhoff Norheimer Dellchen Riesling Großes Gewächs trocken – Germany, Nahe (11/4/2008) Slate, wet stones, ripe yellow fruit on the honeyed, enjoyable nose. On the penetrating and intense palate searing citruslike acidity, masses of ripe fruit, minerals and a distinct smokey element. Lingering after-taste. Very primary, but already enjoyable. Might merit a higher score in time. (94 pts.)

2007 Van Volxem Wawerner Goldberg Riesling Erste Lage – Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (10/13/2008) Heather honey, ripe yellow fruit and minerals on the delicious nose. Broad, but fresh palate, with honey, fruit, minerals, spices, lots of glycerol. Young but already expressive. Delicious in its youthful exuberance, but clearly holding back for more. Again a success for 2007. (93 pts.)
