The label of Château Mouton Rothschild 2008 has been designed by Chinese artist Xu Lei. Since 1945, Mouton Rothschild each year selects another artist to design its label. It is only the second time that a Chinese artist has been chosen. The label of Mouton Rothschild 1996 was designed by the Chinese calligrapher Gu Gan. Xu Lei has drawn a ram on top of a rock. The ram is the emblem of Château Mouton Rothschild. Expensive Bordeaux wines are increasingly being bought by wealthy Chinese. Château Lafite, reportedly the most popular wine with rich Chinese, will bottle its 2008 with an embossed Chinese character ‘8’ on each bottle. The character 8 is apparently an auspicious symbol in Chinese tradition. Although yet to be bottled, the price of Lafite increased after the announcement by 17% in 48 hours, according to Liv-ex, an online auction for expensive wines.
