French wine export declines, Champagne hit hardest

French wine exports may fall this year by twenty percent by volume. Champagne is the hardest hit, with an expected decline of 35 per cent in turnover, according to the Bloomberg financial news agency. Expensive wines are hit the hardest. In countries like the United States, Great Britain and Japan wine consumption fell sharply. Dealers in Russia are suffering paying arrears. In China, growth has halved. In France there is no sales growth this year. According to Yves Dumont, Chairman of Laurent-Perrier, the French champagne houses face a volume decline of 20 percent. This represents a decline in sales of 35 percent. Next year will also be difficult, although Claude de Jouvencel, president of the French Federation of Wine Exporters, expects a slight recovery “because wine stocks need to be supplemented”.

  2. Not surprising that sales of French wine and champagne are down drastically. The bankers , brokers and speculators that were popping champagnes and first growth wines to celebrate their profits are all in Chapter 11 in the US and much of Europe. Many US wine & spirit distributors are bankrupt, Russian are not paying their bills, the Chinese boom towns in the coastal areas have many of their factories shuttered up – the hostesses are all going back to their villages as the karaokes and night clubs are closed due to lack of high spending customers.

Reality is biting and many of world’s liquor and spirit brands may be up for sale by the end of this year – especially those that had acquired new brands at exorbitant price last year or have aggressively build new distilleries or bought alot of stocks of cognac or Scotch whisky…Humpty Dumpty is going to have a great fall….
