Dutch drink more wine, less French

The Dutch consumed 423 million litres of wine in 2007, significantly more than the year before, when they consumed 383 million litres. The popularity of French wine in the Netherlands is in constant decline since 1998, when France held 47% of the Dutch wine market. In 2007 the French market share was 32% or 134 million litres. A quarter of the imports comes from non-European producers, with South Africa (7%) and Chili (6%) as most popular non-European wine sources in the Netherlands. German wines are becoming more popular in the Netherlands, representing 15% of imports in 2007 (63 million litres), more than double from 1998, when the German share of the Dutch wine market was only 7%.
